Dinosaurs and the Bible

I. When were dinosaurs created?

The Bible says that all land animals were created on day 6 of the creation week. This includes most of the dinosaurs. There were probably some flying creatures or some great sea creatures created on day 5 of the creation week that are also considered by some to be dinosaurs.

Since the Bible says that man was also created on day 6, this means that the Bible indicates that man saw and lived among these dinosaurs. The Bible indicates that the animals all ate vegetation at the beginning and that they were generally friendly with man. Dinosaurs were probably not the terrible monsters that the movies make them out to be although after the flood there are some stories of dinosaur-like creatures bothering and eating men.  (some of this information comes from “Were dinosaurs on Noah’s Ark”)

II. Some evidence that man has seen dinosaurs

1) “Descriptions of dinosaur-like creatures are even found in the Bible (Job 40:15–41:34).”

2) “Apparent dinosaur sightings by man from centuries past are legion, in the form of dragon legends around the globe.13  This magazine has previously shown photographic evidence of ancient rock drawings of dinosaurs.”

3) There is evidence the Australian Aborigines saw dinosaurs.

4) There are numerous accounts of “lake monsters” around the world.

(from  Rebecca Driver “Australia’s Aborgines. . .did they see dinosaurs?”)

III. Were there dinosaurs on Noah’s ark?

1) The Bible indicates that two of every “kind” of land vertebrate including dinosaurs were on the ark. (Genesis 6:19-20)

2) “Although there are about 668 names of dinosaurs, there are perhaps only 55 different ‘kinds’ of dinosaurs. Furthermore, not all dinosaurs were huge like the Brachiosaurus, and even those dinosaurs on the Ark were probably ‘teenagers’ or young adults. Indeed, dinosaurs were recently discovered to go through a growth spurt, so God could have brought dinosaurs of the right age to start this spurt as soon as they disembarked.” The huge ark had plenty of room for all the animals.  (from “Were the dinosaurs on Noah’s Ark”)

IV. How did dinosaurs become extinct?

Evolutionists have many theories. They are not sure what killed the dinosaurs. To them it is a big mystery.

Creationists point out that many animals have become extinct since the flood. The dinosaurs are but one of many. They probably became extinct for many of the same reasons that other animals become extinct: environmental changes, hunting, disease, etc.

It should also be noted that some creationists think that it is still possible that we might find a living dinosaur in some remote part of the world.

V. Did the dinosaurs evolve into birds?

“Most evolutionists now believe that birds evolved from dinosaurs. However, there are well-informed evolutionary dissenters who are experts on birds, such as Alan Feduccia, his late colleague Larry Martin, Theagarten Lingham-Soliar, John Ruben, and Storrs Olson.”

“Scripture explicitly teaches that God made birds (and other air creatures) and sea creatures on Day 5 of Creation Week. He made land animals and man on Day 6. Since dinosaurs were land animals, they have a different origin from birds, and indeed came after birds. Therefore the Bible contradicts dino-to-bird evolution.”

“Some evolutionists claim that feathers evolved from scales, but scales are folds in skin. Feathers, on the other hand, are complex structures with barbs, barbules, and hooks. Feathers also originate in a totally different way, from follicles inside the skin in a manner akin to hair. Finally, feather proteins (φ-keratins) are biochemically different from skin and scale proteins (α-keratins) as well.6 It is nonsensical to think any animal would accidentally stumble upon the special function, shape, biochemistry, and anatomical developmental pathway of feathers by chance, especially when the intermediate stages have little to no known survival advantage.”

The lungs of a bird and the lungs of a reptile are also very different.  (from Jonathan Sarfati and Robert Carter “Did dinosaurs evolve into birds?”)

The previous existence of dinosaurs with feathers has not been proven.  (from Brian Thomas and Jonathan Sarfati “Researchers remain divided over ‘feathered dinosaurs’”)
